Motley corn X w. fox snake?

herpin1579 Sep 05, 2003 07:10 AM

Now before I even ask the question. I dont want this to turn into a big contreversy! I would just like to know if anyone has bred a fox snake to a corn. They are similar in appearence except the fox snake is a dull color with a bright red head. What would the babies of a motley x fox look like?

Not me.

You got a western fox snake with a red head??? I've seen something like a hundred w. fox snakes, but only one redheaded, and that was years ago. I didn't realize how rare they were around here back then, and I'm right in the middle of w. fox snake range. All the others I've seen had heads in shades of brown or gray. You lucky, lucky guy! I'm not up on prices, but I'd expect redheadded w. fox snakes to sell for a premium compared to normal fox snakes.

FWIW, motley is a recessive mutant in the corn. Crossing a normal corn to a motley corn produces corns with normal looking blotched patterns. I'd expect the same to be true from crossing a motley corn to a fox snake. Otherwise I'd expect a snake that would be roughly intermediate between a normal fox snake and a normal corn snake. I once saw a cross between a normal corn snake and a normal Texas rat snake. It was roughly intermediate between the parents. Boring, IMHO, but YMMV. I'd expect something pretty similar from a corn x fox snake cross.
