Albon Dosing Help Needed

vegasbilly Sep 01, 2008 08:14 PM

Hi All!

I bought some Albon in powdered form from a vendor here on KS. It came in a big pouch and the total weght is 3.77oz.! It has no concentration info on it other than:

Concentration Use of Directions
Chickens 0.05% Contents of package to 50 gals. water
Turkeys .025% to 100 gals.of water

Klingenberg says to dose at 50mg/kg
How on earth am I to get the correct concentration/dosage?

The vendor was not really interested in helping. Comments returned from my email said "mix it w/water and gve to them orally"!

Do I weigh the powder dry and merely mix it w/solution?

Any help would be appreciated as I'm stuck w/some pricey meds. and no way to figure out how to utilize them.

Bill,
After converting ounces to grams and gallons to liters, the Albon powder you are using calculates out to 88% sulfadimethoxine. To get the correct amount of powder to give a 50 mg/ kg dosage, just divide your prescribed dosage by the 0.88 figure. This shows that you will need 57 mg of your Albon powder to get 50 mg of sulfadimethoxine for every kg of body weight.

If the animal is still feeding, I would buy some gel capsules and fill them with the powder and place them in the smallest food item it will eat. If not, I guess you are stuck with tubing a solution, which is less effective in delivering the full dose. If you are using this for anything other than a coccidia infection, there are other more effective drugs available.

Kelly,

Thank you so very much! I greatly appreciate you taking the time to do the math for me!

I'm having a difficult time finding a scale to weigh out in mg. How can I make a larger bottle of solution so as to dose in cc or ml quantities? I'm assuming its .1cc/ml per 100gms of bodyweight?

Thanks again for your previous help.

Bill,
I was wondering if you were able to weigh these small quantities. However, ml's and cc's are equivalent, so if you dissolve 11.5 grams of the powder in 100 cc's of water you will have a solution with approximately 100 mg of sulfadimethoxine per cc of water. If that's too concentrated, dissolve 11.5 grams of the powder in a liter (1,000 cc) of water to give you a solution that has 10 mg per cc.

Thanks! Yhat did the trick! I actually used a .5 liter bottle for a 50mg/ml which is perfect! Thanks again for taking the time to help me!
