How to stop nose-rubbing?

senorsnake Sep 02, 2008 07:19 AM

One of our boas just won't quit nose rubbing. We had her in a screen top tank, but after she rubbed her nose raw we moved her to a rubbermaid cage to keep her from hurting herself. She still rubs on the rubbermaid, but hasn't harmed herself further. I'm wondering if there is some reason for her doing this, and is there a way of preventing it?

Try increasing her food intake.
Try providing a hide box.
Check your thermal gradients.
If she's sexually mature and she's "on the prowl", you may not be able to stop her!
Hope this helps.

If you get her out of a Rubbermaid and into something a little taller, assuming this is a relatively short container, that will help.

The cure for nose rub though is providing a perch. I produced many many baby Hoggs that are notorious for nose rubbing. After putting a perch in shoe boxes a few years ago, I have not had a single nose rub from them. This though the perch is only about 2 inches above the floor. They don't know it's only 2" up and all they really want is to climb on something. That should do it.

..... with my HypoHog babies. Not with a perch, but with taller water containers. They don't hang in the water, but sit along the tops. Their nose rubs stopped when I used these taller water dishes. I never put it all together though -- thanks Jeff.

I'll try the perch in the cage and increasing her food- she is ALWAYS hungry. Already have hides and whatnot.
