chytrid fungus??

FrogGirl80 Sep 05, 2003 08:14 AM

Hi all. I noticed that nearly all of my frogs were shedding this morning. Several of them have shed just days ago. I did some searching on google.com and found that excessive shedding could be signs of a chytrid fungus attack. Is this possible with CB animals that have not been introduced to any WC frogs? Also, I havent added any new frogs to my collection for a long time. The only change I can think of is the feeding. I have heavily increased the feeding over the past couple weeks so that my frogs would gain some weight. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Hello. Don't be worried about them shedding because all frogs shed their skin often; however, it is skin sloughing that you have to watch for. By this I mean just small sections coming off. Captive animals can contract batrachochytrium; in fact, this was how the disease was discovered! Anyway, by feeding your frogs a lot they will tend to shed more often, especially if they are still not adult size. There are other symptoms of the disease like skin lesions and a reduction in activity. Most likely your animals are ok but in the event other symptoms occur get them to an amphib specialist vet right away.

Good luck
