What do you do when...

august9 Sep 04, 2008 12:13 PM

This question may sound a bit silly, but I wanted to get some feedback from those of you who take vacations or are away from home for a few days. When you take a vacation or trip, how do you take care of your large monitor lizards? Do you think it is wise to have someone feed them while you are away?

I do not take trips very often, but on ocassion I will have to. Do you have any tricks for feeding a monitor (i.e water monitor) while you are away. Is there something they can eat that will give them what they need until you return?

Thanks for any input you can provide!

Reptiles can go a long period of time with out food. As long as you have your heat and lights operating on a timer than a good size meal should last them until you return. I recently went away for a week and just gave a normal feeding and changed the water the day I left and he was absolutely fine. I would not go on a vacation for more than a week though, 2 weeks at the most. Keeping reptiles requires some sacrifice.

I got your e-mail about the Blackthroat but my reply did not go through. Said there was an error in the return address. You can try to e-mail me again at schaythe@aol.com if you like. Thanks

It really depends on the animal. With adults I offer a large feeding prior to leaving and then feed again when getting him. When I was recently in daytona, only my veggie eaters got fed while we were gone and that was only 1 time. I loaded my savy on food the day before and left a load of insects for him to hunt while gone. He is definitely past mealworm and cricket size, but they do enrich him and offer him some exercise and hunting time.
