New Litter

Jeff Clark Sep 05, 2008 12:18 PM

Jari is delivering her litter. This is my fifth Rainbow Boa and fourth Brazilian litter of the year. So far it looks like more than a dozen healthy babies, 1 stillborn and two slugs. Two of the babies look like they are half the weight of the others and are probably twins though already out of the membrane so I cannot tell for sure. The other babies look slightly smaller than typical. I will weigh some of them and the two twins?. I did not expect a big litter from Jari. She has delivered large 20 litters the last two years. This is day 121 POS. She has shed twice since then. Last observed matings ware late march. Paru is the father of this litter. Both Paru and Jari were imported in 1992.

Thanks Dave. Final count seems to be 16 live healthy babies of which two are seemingly twins, one fullterm stillborn and two slugs. The twins? weigh 12 and 14 grams and others in the litter weigh 24 to 28 grams. There are nine males and 7 females.

Thanks for the stats. You were right, they are a little on the small side. Most of my litters are in the 30ish grams range. I did have one in the low 20's and they of course are just fine.

Those two little ones sound just like my known twins from last year, right around same combined weight as one sibling and one smaller than the other. Again, both my twins did just fine, just need smaller meals -- duh.

I've got a female due and on the prowl, expecting babies from her any time now.

I pulled out my dopler last night, she was in her water bowl so I checked her that way with no ultra-snot. Seemed to work very well. Found lots of very strong, quite loud heartbeats. This is the closest to birth I've ever used it I'm certain. Was kinda cool how obvious the difference was. Also chacked two other visually gravid girls and found weaker tones in them. They're not due for at least another week or two so expected the tones to be weaker.

still waiting for my pic fix!!!!

Good move on trying the Doppler in the water. Linda's mention of balloon trick with Doppler had me thinking to try Doppler with the snake in the water.

Dave,
...The Jari is a river in northern Brazil. So far nothing really different in my 2008 babies except for two with bullseyes in the 8/26 litter.
