Balls and melamine racks

DougM Sep 06, 2008 12:02 PM

I'm new to keeping balls in tubs/racks and I'm about to finish building my first rack. Is it necessary to put a pin or something on the front of the shelf to keep the snakes from pushing the tub out? The underside of the shelf is slick melamine. Is an adult ball strong enough to escape if I don't use pins to "lock" the tubs in? Thanks in advance for your responses!

I don't have any type of pins or locks on my racks. Just an 1/8" gap between the tub and top of the bin. they will not push out.

I have yet to see a ball python move a tub out, but anything is possible. I use storm window turn buttons attached to the shelf above, and turn them down to hold the tub in. This is more for ME rather than the snake. This way I know I pushed the tub in all the way.

Escapees like to crawl into the back of the rack(down the outside of the tub). Then wedge themselves in,thus pushing that tub open.So the pins are a good precaution, for keeping an escapee from setting any others loose.

been there....

a couple times I left a tub slightly pulled out, and as charles said the snake went behind and pushed out two other tubs letting three out.

no worries for me, my snake room is totally escape proof, its just a matter of rounding them up.
picture ID comes in handy for identification. LOL
