A look back at kingsnake

jonathan-m Sep 06, 2008 03:50 PM

I thought this was pretty neat. Its a web archive of Ks from january 1998. All the links in it are fully functional, even the classifieds.
Has anyone on here been on Ks long enough to remember these days?

I was nine years old when this page was up.

I became a member in 2004...going on 5 years...

I frequented sites back in those days, I just don't remember anyone in particular. I never registered for any site...paranoid!

Took me a long time to register Hotmail, which I finally gave in and joined in 98', 10 Years same email....WoW!

Consider W3C was founded in 94' it's amazing what it is today. I remember downloads and the connection during those days...hours to days for single files, not the streaming media we have today.

Cheers Kingsnake! Thanks for all the great times!

I remember when Jeff came to our Central Texas Herp Club meeting to explain it all to us. I believe it was in '96. Something like that. The man had a vision and smart business sense. One of the dot-coms that didn't go bust. We all owe him a debt of gratitude.

I think I didn't give in and start perusing the internet until a year or so later ;p Back then, a lonely teen living in the middle of nowhere, I frequented chat rooms. Boy was I misled by hormones, I should have started into boas then and would have saved myself a ton of time!
Although, I don't think my Dad would've been quite as thrilled with it. He only handles the idea now because of my age, and to give me a hard time. Ten years ago in 1998 it was "Get that out of the house!" Six years ago it was "What kind of girl has a snake for a pet?" Now its "What kind of girl has 60 something snakes?" LOL! It was fine when I was a kid and put catfish and bass in an aquarium, brought home wild lizards, and birds... but he wasn't too keen when I actually spent money on the leg-less variety!
That is pretty much all I remember about 1998... catching critters on a farm. Cool to go back in time and see what was happening on these forums and in the herp community when I was still dreaming of living on my own!

Thanks! That was cool. Being from Texas I do remember hearing about the site soon after that time. Not many morphs on the classifieds, huh.

I do remember when kingsnake.com was in that format. I even remember some of those people advertising in the classifieds and I wonder where happened to some of them. At that time it was really a big deal to find even that much reptile stuff on the internet. Just before that time it was big deal to get pricelists and the mini magazines that some of the herp societies put out in the mail every month.

I had a friend back then who was always talking about Kingsnake. I checked it out a few times. But surfing the internet on a 56 kbps (which never gave you more than a 45 kbps speed) was absolutely grueling, as someone has previously mentioned. I wasted WAAAAAAAAAY too much time on the computer waiting for webpages to come up on an Apple computer from 1993. It wasn't too long before this that the internet didn't even have pictures, it was all text. Anyone remember that? My e-mail was UNIX based.
