High White Cal King Question

rekadan Sep 06, 2008 07:50 PM

Is it common for high white cal kings to have or develop a yellowish tint as they age? Albinos too? I've seen a few that appear to be yellowish especially right behind the head down the first third of the body. Just curious if this is common among most high whites or if there are lines that are white and stay that way.

Thanks!

It may all depend on the bloodline, as some may get tints of yellow as they get older, but some don't. I have a hi white male that has stayed white without obtaining any hints of yellow.

I have heard that some hi whites were from breeding bananas to hi whites, then breeding back and forth to produce a higher white percentage, and then resulting in a higher amount of white on the snake overall. If this is the case, I have wondered if the yellow may come from bananas being used? This is all speculation, but something I have thought about.

That's exactly what they are. Bananas are a mixture of "Newport" and "striped" Cal kings that have been selectively bred for many generations. The high whites are the result of breeding these bananas to desert phase Cal king. That strain is also selectively bred for many generations to get rid of the yellow.
