It's pretty simple really. Just remember there are two types of traits- recessive traits and selectively bred traits. Homo and het refer to recessive traits, with homozygous meaning the trait is expressed and het meaning it is present but npot expressed (only one gene of the pair required for expression is present). The het individual has a 50/50 chance of passing that het gene on to its offspring.

Selectively bred traits, like tang, hypo, carrottail etc... do not have the certainty recessive traits do. Animals will probably look like a combination of parents but could have more or less of a trait than either parent. For example you could breed two 50% carrottails (geckos with carrot covering half of tail) and get a bunch of geckos with around 50% carrot, but some would likely have less, maybe 30%, and some will probably have more, like 70%. You hold back (SELECT) the ones that express the trait you want mostl, and next year hopefully your animals will average more of the trait you are trying to increase, with your best animals having even more than your best last year. By breeding selectively the individuals that have the most of the selectively bred trait we seek, we are able to increase the amount of that trait through the generations.

Maybe it's reading all that that gets confusing. Maybe an example of a punnet square (a Google search should yield more than enough results) would be a good way to imagine it for the recessive traits...
