Feeding Question about Argentine Boa

kherp Sep 07, 2008 06:57 PM

I just purchase my first Boa at Daytona. It is a baby Argentine and it seems very healthy, very active and alert. However, I've had him for two weeks and have tried to feed him three times with no success. Today I watched him strike at an adult mouse, pick it up with his mouth and move it but then he ignored it for the next hour. The mouse I tried to feed him is about the size of the thickest part of his body. Is the mouse too big? Are their any special tricks I should try? Help is very much appreciated!

Sounds like a security issue. That, or temperature.
Been my experience Argentine Boas get pretty stressed out when temperatures are too high.
Try keeping the temp at 80F to 84F.
No bright lights. Spray a little moisture (water) into the gage with a plant spray bottle.
Provide a hide. If using a live mouse, kill it first and leave it halfway into the hide box. Snake inside hide, of course.
Do this in the evening.
Check in the morning.

I check my temps last night. My air temp is about 85 under ceramic heater. That would not include the added temp of the heating pad under the hide. Do you think that is too hot?

I'll try the spraying and mouse in the hide box. Thanks!

He may just want a Rat pup,is there anyway You can find out what He was eating before You picked him up. Try live then F/T warmed up. Every Argentine Ive ever had ate like a horse no matter what ,it sounds like he just needs a kick start or the Right food item.

I was wondering the same thing. I'll have to track down the breeder and ask what he was feeding. Thanks for the advice!

I feed my guy F/T ratpups. But after i thaw them out i place em on a towel on top of the cage, he picks up the scent and starts cruising the tank. Then he is more than eager to chow down. We can all relate when we smell some BBQ in the air.
