Updated Pics of Speedbump and Magnum

lilypad42 Sep 07, 2008 08:31 PM

I figured since I was uploading the pics of the babies, I would show you updates of the rest of the gang...

Magnum is on top, 3 years old this month. Male/Female? What do you think? I've had this little chubby one since s/he was a hatchling. After numerous trial runs this summer, s/he will be joining Daisy and Dozer in the outside pen next spring.

Speedbump is the bottom pic. She is doing well after having her back leg amputated at the beginning of the summer (hit and run). The remaining back leg is increibly weak and she tends to not move too much. Due to her immobility, I have serious doubts about her ever going outside with Daisy, Dozer and Magnum.

Magnum might be a bit too young for anyone to reliably guess sex at only 3 yrs old, a belly/tail shot may or may not be useful. I personally wouldn't see any reasons for Speedbump not to join the others outside next year, but I could think of a lot of benifitial reasons in favor of her joining them, fresh air, sunshine and thunderstorms, and of course making babies, but she is your turtle, you should do what you think is best and what you are comfortable with.

Don't get me wrong, I would love her to to go outside next season. However, due to her disability, I think it might be unfair to put her in the enclosure with the other turtles. Dozer can be a little pushy, and I don't want him picking on her. I was thinking of putting her in a smaller enclosure by herself with less rocks, logs, etc, to have to maneuver around. But I will have to see how she progresses over the fall and winter. To me, its amazing she has survived all of this trauma, which may result in my being a little over protective of her Even if she does stay indoors, I will ensure she always gets SOME outdoor time during the day, along with her UV lamps and vitamin supplements in her tank.

I wouldn't think twice about putting her outside either. Don't get me wrong, I'd keep a close eye on them, but you would be surprise how well disabled animals, especially turtles do in the wild. She might show some increased mobility by putting her outside too; kind of giving her a reason to live type thing... That's just my two cents.

I understand were you are coming from, you have put a lot of care and effort into that turtle, just try to make sure you do what is best for the turtle not you own feelings, you know what i mean, easier said than done, I realize.

Just FYI, I once caught an almost adult painted turtle. To my initial horror I thought something had bitten off both its front legs. Than I notice it had tiny, malformed front legs. Somehow it had survived its whole life with only back legs, in the wild!

Nice pictures and so kind of you to take Speedbump into your home and heart and give her a good home!

Ok-for fun and a wild guess- just a feeling-I think Magnum is a boy-why? The clear eyes which may soon turn reddish and the red on his neck and head. Can you give us a tail shot? Tess

lilypad42 Sep 09, 2008 01:22 PM

Thanks so much for your comments

I think he is a boy too! The plastron has the curve of a male turtle. Unfortunately, I don't know if the tail shot will be helpful. Magnum's tail is TINY and his cloaca looks slightly deformed. (Possibly from getting stepped on as a hatchling?) I will post a pic anyway when I get home.

By the way, do you think Speedbumps eyes look alright? I did take her to the vet, but the outer rim of her pupil is very jaggedy, not smooth like the other turtles' eyes... possible trauma from being hit by the car? They also look foggy to me. (I'm such a worrier )

They are beautiful.
I didn't know you were Daisy/Dozer.. I remember those names.
So, Speedbump looks healthy.
Sorry about the eggs, but I bet those babies were fun to find!

This is a weird thing to divulge, but last year I found 3 babies in my pen and while I was finding them I remembered that I had had a dream of finding baby turtles that recurred all through my childhood! It was very deja vu-ish and sent me back looking for weeks...
Thanks for taking the time to post so many photos, they were real fun to see./p

Haha, yes the infamous Daisy and Dozer! When I first got them I posted here alot due to my inexperience. Once I got the hang of things I wasn't on quite as much to post myself, but I kept reading the postings.

It's interesting you say that about your childhood dream. I had something similar happen with this batch. A few weeks prior to finding these babies I had 3 baby sea turtles tattooed onto my foot (to represent my three brothers, my love of turtles, and my love of the ocean) - Since I had the tattoo everyone in my family kept asking how the "baby turtles" were doing - referring to the tattoo... strangely, when we initially found the babies we only found 3... (#4 was found much later in the day.) At that time it seemed like getting the tattoo almost predicted the finding of these little ones. No everyone asks how the baby turtles are doing, but the real ones! Strange how things work out!

Here is the pic of the tattoo:
(I was originally going to do EBT babies, but I wanted to incorporate the ocean - plus the dark colors of the EBT babies didnt make for a good tatt)

Very nice tatoo of three sea turtle hatchlings! Colorful and should look great on your foot for a long time

I was wondering whatever happened to Speedbump. It's nice to know she has a good home! She's really one of most beautiful easterns I've seen.
