Rack Heat Options

bakeaway Sep 08, 2008 11:30 AM

There are so many options now for heating racks. Which do most of you use and which seem the best. I see avail belly heat, back heat and heatr tape down the side? This is for kings and pits.
I have 1 rack already with cable heat.

Thanks

David

It really depends, a lot. I see rack heat mis-used quite a bit.

In my opinion, the most important (in no particular order) condiderations are:

1) Species being kept.

2) Temperature of room where rack will be kept.

3) Material and design of the rack.

I only have two racks with supplemental heat (the original Vision racks, different from the current model) and they both use heat cable where I can custom route cable on each level. But it is routed in 1" thick PVCX so there is a lot of thermal mass, which is ideal.

Most of the time that rack heat is not used properly is when you have an open rack lacking thermal mass. In a relatively cool room just having a heat pad underneath can create hot spots. This is especially bad if the tubs are set up with a simple plastic bowl and paper substrate.

thanks Chris,,,,i will keep some of my kings and pits in the rack. my room temp in winter rarely falls below 70F. And i have always used aspen so the snakes can burrow if they want more warmth.
just seemed so many new options out there,,that i wondered if any were better.
Thanks again
