pastel vs. Super pastel

I know that you need pastels to produce supers, but can someone tell me the difference in these, and can someone post pics of each so that I can see. Thanks.

I am assuming that you know the gentic difference to the Super and pastel. Super transfers the pastel gene to 100% of babies where pastel only transfers pastel gene to 50%.

As far as looks you can tell a super from a normal pastel because the super is much more faded and has a rather pale looking head.

Just do a search for pastels and supers and you can also look at bumble bees and killer bees. It is the same thing when it comes to the faded color.

If you don`t mind me asking, what pastel line(s) didiyou use to get that super??

NoahHart Sep 08, 2008 11:40 PM

I didnt produce it so im not sure what lines. Sorry.

You can make a super from any pastel to pastel, super pastel to pastel, or super to super.

Both parents have to have the pastel to produce a super.

I know that if you breed a normal to a pastel you will get a mix of some wild type (WT) and some pastel. If you breed the WT's from that clutch. They will just produce more WT's if bred back to a WT right?

That is correct...Normals from pastelXnormal clutches will only produce normals when bred to normals.(Nothing is hidden, which is why they are not referred to as a recessive trait.)

Furthermore,a pastel is a visable het for super pastel.
So all the cards are on the table so to speak.(Whereas with aptly named recessives the hets are not visable.Such as albino or hypo or piebald etc.)

The reason i ask is because it strongly resembles the Ruppel stonewash supers. In my opinion.

NoahHart Sep 09, 2008 05:12 PM

I thought so too which is why i bought him. Thanks.

I appreciate all the answers. The reason I'm asking is because I love snakes and want to learn more about them. I was thinking about possibly breeding, but I want to learn all I can. Also, how is the market for new breeders?? Is it hard to get your foot in the door so to speak?

exoticball Sep 10, 2008 11:29 AM

From what I am seeing it doesn't look to hard for a new breeder to pop up biggest thing is breed some good quality snakes keep them clean and get great pictures. Then offer them at a lower hand price just because you don't have a huge rep behind you and start making friends.

I am in the process of starting up a little biz and that is how I plan on doing it. I should have 2 pastel clutchs this next season!!! Can't wait!

And as it seems you have already figured out, READ READ READ! Read the forms, books, website to know all that you can as you start this adventure. Plan ahead- I have been studing incubaters even though I don't need on for at least 4-5 more months.

And don't forget ASK QUESTIONS!!! best way to find out if you are on the right track or way off in the bondocks!
