Bad Shed Problem Any help appreciated

Dave Northcott Sep 08, 2008 04:12 PM

I have a young carpet that seems to have a problem with excessively dry skin. When he sheds the skin seems to be firmly stuck and comes off in little flakes. Soaking, a moist hide box, seem to help some but I'm thinking that maybe it goes deeper than that. My thought is that it's some kind of vitamin or other supplemental deficency. Anyone had any experience in this arena??

Thanks
Dave

I would be inclined to think it's environmental more than anything. What type of enclosure are you using? What is the temp gradient? Ambient RH? Is the moist hide in the enclosure at all times? What type of substrate?

Also, do you keep FRESH water available at all times? Some folks simply add to the existing water in bowl, without thoroughly cleaning the bowl and replacing all the water. Internal hydration is as important (if not more) as external moisure/hydration. My carpets are kept with humidity at about 30-40%, which is somewhat low, but it is the average humidity in my home. With proper internal hydration, I rarely, if ever, encounter any shed problems.

The only time I really do any misting is usually during the breeding season.

Good luck!

ive kept snakes for years but have only been keeping a carpet for a little more than a year now. at first she hid or climbed alot and rarely drank. only when i would forceably soak her in the sink would i see her drink. Drink like a horse too. maybe your snake is the same. try forced soaking.

Misting the cage, providing a bigger fresh water bowl, putting the water bowl near the heating pad or tape etc.

My carpets are kept relatively dry and i still have no problems with sheds.
