New Herp Room

zach_whitman Sep 08, 2008 06:42 PM

So I finally got my first house this summer and now have my own designated reptile room.

No finishing touches yet, but you get the idea...

Look, I even have storage space!!

Nice Zach, and congrats on the first house.

Just curious, but is that a neighbors house you see through the window or is that your garage?

Also, what box is that you're using on the top level of the large rack? Is it the exact same height as the cambros below or did you have to adjust the height for that box?

I'm betting neighbor's as typical people don't have separate electrical service with an additional meter on a un-attached garage. Also the siding is different.

Good Job Zach, looks like you took the threaded rod rack to a whole new level!

Cheers

That is my neighbors garage

Its the only window that you can see another house. Some views from the rest of the windows...

and the house itself

As far as the boxes... Those are the mid size cambros that are missing from the other small rack. They are about a quarter of an inch shorter than the exlg cambros that are in the rest of the rack, so yes that shelf is specifically for them. But thats the beauty of these racks, I can change shelf heights for whatever box I want to in literally minutes.

Cheers

Your back yard is really really awesome. It's looks so......photogenic I guess is the word. That's a really nice place you've got there.
The snakeroom looks great too! You might wanna consider better escape prevention at the window though

Ha, yeah. The whole room should be snake proofed. It has been on my list of things to do, but that list is pretty long at the moment.

I lost one of the nicest kings of the year a few days ago, and there are only about 8 million places he could be....grrr

I really like the threaded rod design. What dia rod is on the large rack?

3/4 inch. Its heavy, and expensive, but I wouldn't go any smaller if you are building a big rack.

The hatchling racks are 1/4 inch rod from home depot.

Kingsnaken Sep 09, 2008 07:57 PM

Hey Zach, would you mind telling me what the 3/4 inch rods cost? Thanks, Derek

zach_whitman Sep 09, 2008 11:30 PM

I don't remember exactly. i bought them a few years ago. The more expensive part was the bolts! Each of those racks has over 120 very large bolts. Go to McMaster-Carr and search for threaded rod. They have about a million options and you can get as fancy as you want. I seem to remember that all 8 rods and 250ish bolts for both racks coming to around $400. Add on the melamine, heat cable and thermostats, and I think it came to about $1100 for both racks.

Since they hold ~25 snakes that works out to be about $40 per cage. The same racks could hold twice that if I was the kind of guy who used minimalist caging. Not the cheapest possible option, but its the best, and easiest to work with rack I have found. And it breaks down completely to move it.

The fact that you can adjust to any box makes it worth the cost.

Hey Zach, is McMaster-Carr the only place to get those threaded rods? Thanks, Derek

zach_whitman Sep 26, 2008 05:44 PM

No, they are around. One of the home depots by me sells some.
