Ball Python won't eat - HELP!!!

spidey46x2 Sep 05, 2003 12:41 PM

I have a 2 year old male ball python is good health.
He has not eaten since March and I am worried. He has shed since then and I have tried every week or so since May. He seems to be acting normal and I have not changed anything lately (temperature, humidity etc)

Can anyone suggest how I can get him to eat?

I'm not too much of an expert but try to take him out and handle him at little before you feed him, it seems to relax mine when i have feeding probelms with him. Also make sure you heat the food well, i use a blow dryer even after its thawed out.

good luck!

First, Give him a week or two off in between offering food. When my female starts refusing, I just let her go for a couple of weeks before offering again. Usually she picks up again, after that.

Second, what are you offering? My female was eating small rats on a regular basis and suddenly she decided she wanted large mice. Go figure!. Sometimes getting offering her fresh killed, rather than f/t gets her attention too.

Third, as long as he isn't losing weight, don't worry to much.

I would not take the advice of the novice in this case (or any other) If you handle your snake too much it can stress the animal.

Are you new to ball pythons?

How are you feeding it and what type/size? i.e. frozen/thawed, live, mice, rats, etc...

How often are you feeding it?

It's important so that I can give you a better understanding of what may be going on.

...if you're feeding f/t, try live. If he was eating rats, try a large mouse. Try spraying him down with warm water in the evening, then offer a live adult mouse. Try upping the temp a bit and then spraying. Or, change his cage. If he's in an aquarium, set him up in a rubbermaid blanket box. If he doesn't have belly heat (undertank heater) GET IT!! A change in housing often will do the trick. Maybe he wants to breed-get him an adult female girlfriend!! Otherwise, he'll start feeding again when he's ready. Don't lose any sleep! Scott J.
