word to the wise about ants

adamsanity Sep 05, 2003 01:03 PM

So my frog likes ants, and they have been a steady food sorce and have worked out well. The downside is that they can chew through the rubber seal on the lid of mason jars which makes it easy for them to just crawl along the threads untill they are out in your house. On the other hand it doesnt seem like they can chew through the silvery plastic lining on the inside of peanut butter jar lids.

I was wondering what kind of ants do you feed? suggestions on a source of colonies. I'm looking to increase the variety of foods I feed.

Thanks

well I dont know the name of the ants but the smallest black ants you can find would be the best or the second to the smallest. As far as getting the colony I looked around for a good ant hill then I took a bulb planter(one of those round metal things) and placed it over the hill then I pushed it down and the bulb planter took the whole colony out tunnels and all then I just gently shook it into the mason jar.

well adam, if you use mason jars they have a few different lid types. Try using the canning type lids. They have a top with a rubber ring to seals the top then a thread peice threads over top of it and holds it in place.
