Is this a good idea/deal???

Sarah_Spencer Dec 12, 2005 08:34 PM

I am thinking about buying a proven pair of yellow ackies that are 4 years old for $300 plus shipping. I was just wondering what you guys thought of this...Is this a good deal? I was also wondering the life span on this guys so I can determine if its worth getting these guys if they're already 4 years old. So if anyone has any input please reply...thanks

Sarah

Learn how to keep them correctly, they will reproduce, as long as they are a pair and they get along, and all basic needs are met.
The problem is this, why would anyone sell a reproductive pair, a "proven pair" so quickly? Id venture to say that "proven" means they want to sell them faster because they had this "supposed" pair for so long with no reproduction occuring.
If they are a pair, they might be worth it if they were say between 1-2 years old. They can live a long time, they can reproduce throughout their lives, but if you are looking for monitors of any species, to breed, you should raise them from hatchlings, the most fun part and the best way to learn to keep them correctly.
Of course they grow so fast..

The pictures from hatching on were all taken in around 1 months time, Ill have to get some new ones. They grow very very fast.

I agree with SHVar's comments. I have had the most success and the most fun with monitors when I purchased them at a young age, typically hatchling, and reared them myself.
Recently, in my pursuit of adding a yellow monitor to my collection, I "stumbled" across a trio of hatchling yellow Ackies. I purchased the trio for $300. I know how old they are, where they have been, and where they originated. The $300 quoted for the pair sounds like a reasonable deal, but I recommend getting them young. You will never have regrets and have time to get to know them as they grow into breeding adults.
There are also few sights more exciting than your baby Ackies chasing their food. I prefer it immensely over feeding my Argus monitors, for obvious reasons.

I totally agree,
I bought 1.1 adult yellow ackies for 350 shipped. I love my ackies dont get me wrong, but I think next time Im going to get hatchlings and raise them up. I love my yellow ackies so much and am so happy with them. Dont shortcut, raising varanids rules! when I get some reds or some blackheadeds, im going to get babies. goodluck
