Red ackie information

KevColubrid Apr 27, 2006 02:18 AM

Hey all,
Just made the decision, after much thought, to get into ackies. Several quick questions.

1. Is an 80 gallon tank big enough for one male? Eventually, I'd like to get a pair, but right now, I'll stick with one. I'm planning on getting a baby, so he'll go in a 20 gallon until he's bigger.

2. For substrate, what do you guys recommend?

3. Feeding, how often?

4. What kind of a heating source do you guys use?

Thanks, I really appreciate it

Kevin

1. An 80 gallon tank should be fine for an adult Ackie.

2. I use plain old dirt for substrate, Ackies like to burrow so make the dirt as deep as possible (12" or more is ideal).

3. I feed my Ackie every day.

4. I heat my cage with ceramic heaters and light it with a florescent bulb.

Note: Ackies require a humidity level of about 50-55% so if you are using a screen top on your tank you will need to cover 3/4 of it to help keep the moisture in.
