Ackie pair ....behavior question

roadspawn May 29, 2006 02:35 PM

Hello
My adult male has bitten off the tip of my females tail. Has this happened to anyone else? I haven't seen any mating. Should I do anything, or let them be....THanks

First things first, did you see him bite the tail off, or are you simply assuming he did?

I could go on and on, but please answer this question first. Thanks

Hey Frank
I saw him bite it off. He had it in his mouth, then he bit it off. I happened very fast. I've seen him go after her tail again. What should I do? Thanks

In all the years of keeping ackies, and that is lots and lots of them, of several types and lots of numbers. I have never seen such a thing.

Don't get me wrong, I have seen ackies bite the beans out of eachother, just not the tail tip. There are some common areas they tend to attack, The neck, hind legs, and sides are the most common. Sometimes the tail base, but as I mentioned, I have never seen them bite the tail tip.

In my experience, lost of tail tip is due to the cage being to dry. Or to much air movement. That type of thing. That is easy to do. Give them drinking water and a dry cage and they lose their tail.

I imagine its possible the male was removing dead tissue. But that is only a possibility. Whatever it is, it does not sound like a good start. Cheers

Hey Frank
Well, I don't think it's due to low humidity levels. The enclosure holds humidity, and the soil is moist at about 1/4 inch deep. She has a deep burrow that she uses. She could have came with a dead tail tip already, but who knows. I see what happens.
