marking its territory?

mr-python Jun 15, 2006 04:31 PM

i just saw my ackie defecate but after it deficated it kinda dragged its bottom around the top board of its stack, kinda like you see a dog do on carpet sometimes.

is this my ackie marking its territory? if so how can i interperate this? does this mean i have him set-up in a good cage where he can carry out normal behaviours like this?

don't take this the wrong way, but you're looking way to into it.

Maybe he had an itch or some stuck poop he was trying to get off. The only way you can really know is to ask him.

mr-python Jun 16, 2006 01:52 PM

phantompoo, i was just asking because i think remember FR saying one time that this was them marking their territory.

Yes, its saying something, I here by mark/tag/label this spot as mine. All other ackies keep your buns off. Or some such thing. Good observation. Did it lift its back legs up in the air while it was doing it? if not, it will. Cheers

mr-python Jun 16, 2006 08:03 PM

it didnt lift its back legs up but it did look like he took all the pressure off of them. he arched his tail too. it was pretty interesting.

do you think if i were to get another red ackie that he would not let the other one on the board to bask? if i do get another one should i rearrange the cage before i introduce it so he doesnt have any 'spots'?

not that ill be getting any more any time soon. i have some savin up to do if i want another one.

No need to fix something that ain't broke. That is, theres an equal chance(%) that another individual would get along fine. Then all you did is mess up the cage.

About tagging, its not a keep off sign, its more like an ownership sign. Like you at school writing your name on a chair in the assembly room. It may be saved for you, and it may not. But it does not mean your going to beat up whomever is sitting in the chair you put your name on. You may end up getting in a fight, but most likely you will discuss the situation and work it out. Thats what monitors do. Cheers

thanks Frank. i was just wondering because me and my dad (who used to keep saltwater fish) were talking about territior/dominance with monitors and he said that with fish he would rearrange the tank when he would introduce a new fish with his oscars, etc.

thanks for the lessons Frank.
