Breeding Ackies

pichereptiles Jun 26, 2006 09:05 AM

I currently have 1.2 Yellow ackies living in a 4x2x2 enclosure
Is this a good size enclosure for breeding?
When is their breeding season? year round?
Do I need to cool them?
Where do they lay their eggs?
I also have a larger female that is double the size of the trio, she is currently living in a serperate enclosure.
Will I be able to introduce her into the trio at some point?

Does anyone know of a good book or website on these guys. I love them but cant seem to find much info on them.

Any info that you can provide would be very much appreciated!
Thanks
Danielle

A 4x2x2ft is good for a pair, but ideally a 6x3x3 for a pair or a trio. Aquariums big enough can be adapted, but not easy to do.
Ditch any screen tops, use a solid top cage.
Ditch the coconut crud, dirt is what they like, not just any dirt, not anything from a store, but something like you find in a creek or river bank, sandy, almost no organic matter at all, a decomposed rock based soil.
They breed when the conditions are right, they lay at about 1ft in depth underground, they do not ever need to cool down or brumate, that is purely a survival technique for some species, cooling can be dangerous if you do not do it right with any reptile, ever wonder why so many keepers loose reptiles after or during the process of cooling them? Dont do it.
Feed them lots of calcium D3 supplemented crickets, give them a high temp basking spot or 2, and let them do their thing.
