UVB study underway ... (finally)

veronicag Sep 05, 2003 01:22 PM

Anyone that knows me well on this board knows that I have been trying to get a UVB study started for about 6 months now. Well, I'm pleased to say that I took my first readings from my new UVB meter last night. Those meters are cool and really handy. I would hate to see anyone spend $180 on one though. I can get them for about $145 if anyone is interested.

The readings are posted on my website, just click on "Project UVB." I've started testing on some Reptisun 5.0 florescent tubes that are 33 days old (493 hours old). I can't afford to go out and buy all new bulbs for testing, so I'll test on what I have until I can get new ones. :D Check back on my site in the next day or so, because testing on a brand new Capture the Sun mercury vapor bulb will begin this weekend! I hope these bulbs test well because there is a need for a low cost mercury vapor bulb. Zoomed's Powersun and T-Rex's Active UV cost considerably more. I will get started on testing those two bulbs this fall!

Thanks for everyones support and please e-mail me if you have a test you'd like me to do for you or a certain bulb you'd like me to check out.

I don't quite understand what W/cm2 is opposed/compared to 5.0 UVB output. Could you explain that?
And if a 5.0 is a fraction of the spectrum, how can it be the same as the sun 3" away? I'm so confused..
It's probably real simple, but I have a habit of making everything difficult..lol

Don't worry, it is very confusing. I plan to write something about what uW/cm2 means as soon as I can get an answer that I completely understand. For now, I just know that it is a measurement of the intensity of the UVB. In other words, how strong it is. The 5.0 in the Reptisun 5.0 stands for 5.0% UVB. I'm guessing that means that the other 95% of the light emitted is visible light or UVA. Interesting huh. Now I wish I had a UVA meter. Ok, that will be next.

Veronica just so you know you can get the Powersuns at www.reptiledirect.com for 33.95 100 watt 37.95 160 watt. I had to get 2 bulbs one 160 and one 100. I went to Big apple and they wanted more shipping just for 1 bulb than reptile direct shipped 2 for. So Reptile Direct is actually cheaper than Big Apple Capture the suns with shipping. I personally think the Powersuns are better too. We'll see. Can't wait for you to test them so I know for sure =). Thanks so much for doing this research for everyone. It is greatly appreciated.

You ansewred my first question already, lol =). I was the one who asked about if a higher uva output next too a uvb bulb would affect the output of uvb tested at a distance. Good thing to know, guess I can go with the double fixtures now.. Great more money.

Do you have a "capture the sun" buln yet? I just got mine and plugged it in a few minutes ago, I am sitting here watching it blink every few seconds but it has not lit up yet, I hope it is not defective.

Yes, I just got one too. All mercury vapor bulbs take a little time to get fully lit up. I think they say 10 to 15 minutes.

Does yours blink on and off completely or just slowly get brighter?

I haven't plugged it in yet. But I have had other mercury vapor bulbs. They kind of flickered for a few minutes then came on steady and bright. But I've never seen one turn completely on and off. That's probably not a good sign. Not sure. But the people at Big Apple Herp are great and I'm sure they'll take care of it. :D

We with two other breeders tested:

Capture the Sun by Big Apple 100 watt Flood
Capture the Sun by Big Apple 160 watt Flood
Active UV Heat now T-Rex 160 Watt Flood
Active UV Heat now T-Rex 100 Watt Flood
Active UV Heat now T-Rex 100 Watt Spot
Powersun by Zoo Med 160 Watt Flood
Powersun vy Zoo Med 100 Watt FLood
Repti-Sun 5.0 Tube
ESU coil
Solar-Brite 160 watt Globe MV

We still need to test the High Noon Mercury Vapor by Nature Zone

All were tested at the recommended minimum range (6inches for tubes, 12-18 inches for MV)

The ESU and Solar-Brite did not put out much UVB when new, 1-3 readings and I would not use these on bearded dragons.

The Tubes were okay when first on, but dropped dramatically and at 3 months, to the point I do not feel they were very effective at all for bearded dragons, but good for an animal that needs less UVB or is supplemented regularly with Calcium with D3, so we give 'em to the water dragon

The Active UV Heat (this was prior Zoo- Med) put out the strongest reading, equal to a typical day in Northern Europe(that kinda puts to rest the theory of too much UVB) and maintained the strongest reading over time, still producing equal to the other MV in the beginning reading, when it went off 14 months later. Unfortunately, since then all the Zoo-Med we have had, have not held up like that one.

PowerSun readings ranged 9-12 over the time we checked them, but again, all went off 3-4 months after first using them but one that lasted 9 months and still producing more UVB than the tubes. This was equal to a VERY overcast day in England.

Capture the Sun was about equal to PowerSun, but dropped faster in output by the 3 month mark when they also went off and had a lot of problems with light fading and going out and returning over the time used. Seems the PowerSuns are doing this now also.

The one spot we tested, had about 3 times as much UVB, but equal to a overcast day in Florida, again we lost it around 3-4 months.

At that point we figured our area was experiencing power surges and this was affecting the lights causing early burn out. But at the point they stopped lighing, all had more UVB output that the tubes did in the first few weeks. Whatever the reason, power surges or the light just themselves not being the quality to last the hours they stated, it was impossible to continue the study for very long.

NOW all this said, I still use PowerSuns and Active UV heat, they may not last as long for us, but we feel they are the best available at this time.... just need to find what the one Active UV Heat had that lasted when the others don't!!!
