can i use beach sand for ackies substrate,or can i use back yard soil baked.

Just use the soil from your back yard, at least a foot deep if it is an adult. There is no need to bake it. You may or may not have to add some sand to your soil. The best way to figure out if your ackie will use it to dig burrows is to just test it out on the animal. You can try adding some sand to it if it doesn't work. You also have to have the right moisture level too. It takes time to figure all of this out, and you kind of have to "play" with your dirt. After you get it however you think will work, allow the ackie to test it. Once you get it right, prepare for having little tunnels everywhere in your cage that your animal will hide in sometimes.
