Time for a new cage.....

hbailey May 15, 2005 09:02 PM

I'm moving and that means new cage time! Time to fix past problems with my enclosure.

I also get to buy another argus and try breeding. So, if anyone wants to give ideas on cage design for a pair. I'm thinking of some varient on lwcamp's designs.

I'll try to post pics when I start construction.

Well, I'd keep it shorter than that monster cage on my page with the 4 foot high plywood box. That thing is a real pain to keep heated. The 2 foot high plywood box works better in this regards.

Good luck,

Luke

Wow, thanks for the heads up before I started construction. Maybe I'll have enough ply to build an enclosure for my sav I plan to get.

I'm planning on housing a pair. Do you always feed outside the cage, or do you seperate them inside the cage with a devider at feeding?

My goal is within a year to have my first clutch hatching. I've learn to be patient, but I'm getting a bit excited about the possibilities of getting closer to my goal.

Thank you again for the info.

Usually, I lure the male out of the cage with a food item, and then feed the female in the cage. Once she has eaten her fill, I return the male to the cage (either by luring it with another food item or just picking him up and putting him back - the latter option usually elicits lots of hissing and scrabbling).

Just one word of warning - always wear fully covered shoes (no sandals) when doing this. Hungry monitors on the floor do not mix well with bare feet. Other than that, I've never had any problems when following this procedure with adults.

Good luck,

Luke

Yeah I seen a post about them going for "free-toes". I thought they only ate meat lol.

Thanks for the info.

i keep my pair of argus monitors in an 8 by 4 i remove the female when shes geting close 2 laying and i put her in a seperate cage. when feeding i take the male out but him in my bath room while i feed the female and i just feed the male in the bath room. my female layed a clutch of 8 eggs on mothersday but i think only about 3 of them will hatch i have been feeding her like crazy and she looks like she might lay another clutch here in a week or 2 so i hope 2 have some more good eggs this time

That's awesome! Laid on Mother's day...nice touch. Your solution and lwcamp's is a better solution than I was thinking. I'll give that a go when I finally get a pair. I'll post some picks when I start the new construction.
