argus food

mkper5 Jun 06, 2005 02:46 PM

I have had my argus monitor for about 5 months now and he is about 2 1/2 feet long. I feed him mice, grasshoppers, snails, crickets and fish. I just fed him chicken hearts and gizzards today and he really liked them. What should a monitor of this ages diet include. Thanks

My argus is just a tad smaller than yours. It loves to eat anything. I feed mine mice, roaches, crawdads, shelled mussels, bass, trout and crappie fingerlings and it seems to love buton quail and fertilized quail eggs.

Where do you get your bass and crappie from. My petstore sells them for 10 bucks a piece. I would catch them and feed em to him but for 1 its illegal to take small fish where I live and they also might carry parasites. I didnt know that you could feed them crappie but I guess it would be fine. I feed mine minnows and chubs every once in awhile. Also should mice comprise most of his diet. I have had succes with other monitors in the past on a mostly rodent diet. Thanks

I have friends in low places.
I get my fish from someone I know that works at a hatchery.
Rodents make a great diet. I just like to switch things up once in awhile. I also have a friend that raises chickens and quail, I get them from him cheap.

and you never shared them with us? Man bet my guys would go for some quail.

Must be nice to have friends (haha)

kap10cavy Jun 08, 2005 08:34 PM

I have one friend, I have known him a long time.
He has a small farm and a petting zoo. He raises chicken, quail, rabbits, all kinds of stuff. I go out to his place, help out awhile and load up on lizard goodies.
I met this one guy that works at a fish hatchery. I desided he could be my friend. He brings me small fish and I take him snake hunting and stuff.
I am always on the look out for good friends like that.

I gotta become your friend so as a friend you can introduce me to your friends which then will become my friends and I can get some goodies as a friend too? Is that what your saying? hmmm I'm not sure if I'm ready for that many friends. Thats hard to say haha

Why not feed it some mice and rats? That was the main diet of the ones I had. I could kick myself for selling them!!! I wish I still has at least one of them.

Why dont you buy one. There is a nice yearling male in the classifieds for 175. Looks healthy

drzrider Jun 08, 2005 01:30 PM

My cages are full now. I have an awesome blackthroat female that is way more calm than my argus ever were. In a way I liked the Argus better, but since this b-throat is "calm" (can that word really be used with a monitor) I like her too.

I did offer someone a trade of my B-throat and 2 young niles for an Argus. I havent heard back from them yet though.

My flavis would fit in to it as well. They are just smaller demons.

You wouldn't want my monitors poor things have been stuck here with me forever. They are probly scarred for life.haha

Magick Jun 08, 2005 05:42 PM

Scared?!?!?!

I believe I was the ONLY one to hold Thrasher WITHOUT gloves!!!!
Okay... so it was only when the guy at the pet shop unexpectedly dropped her into my hands when she was tiny

JP... I'll pay the shipping if you want your demons to have a wonderful home LOL

I thought maybe I put scared instead of scarred. But looked back to see you were talking about comments made by the other half.

I didn't realize you both posted on here. I thought couples chatted online at (clears throat) other sites hahaha

Becareful I may just send all their demon children to your doorstep. So I suppose he has you handling the niles all the time too then?

Magick Jun 08, 2005 10:05 PM

Actually... I handle the babies he won't... My Snakes

I do miss the Argus though... and the Green Water Dragons that started us on the cold-blooded path.

His demons are dangerous... mine just give good hugs

Nope, she won't touch the niles or the b-throat.

She is into ball pythons. Can you beleive we walked into a python breeders shop and she asked the owner if she could hold one of his balls. After he replied "You can hold both of them," she realized that she didn't say hold one of his ball pythons and she got very, very embarrased. I still pick on her about that.

JPsShadow Jun 09, 2005 12:27 PM

Thats funny , Don't ever let her live that one down.

Made me think of my albino boa she was born with one eye. hmmmm 5 foot one eyed white snake has possibilities.

Magick Jun 09, 2005 07:50 PM

Don't worry... He won't let me live it down... It happened over a year ago!!! LOL

And with that... I'll return to the Ball Python forums...

I got a friend who feeds dead ball pyhtons to his king cobra. I bet my monitor would like to try one. A snake breeder I know used to give me his cornsnakes that had died in his collection and my nile monitor loved em.

LIZARDLOVER11 Jun 08, 2005 08:48 PM

my argus is nice and calm, also mice makes a great deal of my arguses diet but i do feed ckicks, mealworms, fish, ground turky( as a small protion), and canned monitor food.
p.s. Ed that flavi's grown a few inces and still pretty calm i'll post pics soon

drzrider Jun 08, 2005 09:05 PM

Cool, I am glad you are enjoying it. I have been looking for you to post some pictures of it.

I got the blackthroat that the people in which you got the Flavi had. I ended up going back the next day and getting it. She is calm for a monitor. She doesn't run, hiss, or tailwhip when I go into the the cage. She will hiss a little and possibly tailwhip if I touch her. She runs up to me when I have food for her though. She has almost doubled in weight and grew over 4 inches in the 1st month.

How is your other argus doing?

LIZARDLOVER11 Jun 09, 2005 02:50 AM

shes doing good, shes about 3 feet now, and what still amazes me to this day is how calm she is(except when shes eating)she hasn't whiped me in atleast a month, but she still hisses lik an argus, i keep her on an almost exclusive rodent diet and i'm afraid she might be getting obese so i'm trying to mix up her diet a little. i got rid of 2 mangroves and i'm in the process of selling a yearling timor, after i do that i'm biulding the flavi a 6x4x4 cage, biuling my tegu( who i got at not this show that just pasted but the one before that) a big cage (when i got him he was 7"-8" now, some 9 months later, is now a few inches shy of 2 feet)and after all this is done i'm considering getting a black throat or a water monitor. but until then i've got a flavi that needs worked on
p.s. compairded to an argus how do you like the black throat

You went from long hair to a shaved head?!?!?!?! I bet that felt weird the first day. LOL

I like b-throats, but for some reason I like argus better. I think it is because argus are smooth and are yellow. Blackthroats are more drab. Mine has some white and yellow when it is clean, which is not often. In my experience b-throats are calmer. I am not used to reaching into a cage and not hearing hissing or being tail whipped if I get to close. I actually have to touch this b-throat for it to hiss. It gets squirmy when I pick it up, but not as bad as my former argus.

My cage is a decent size for a female Argus. I am going to need to expand it for the b-throat in the future.

I have not seen this b-throat dig very much yet. My argus were digging every day. I recently switched niles and b-throat cages. They are still getting used to new enclosures. I hope they are not stressed too much.

Catch you later
