Argus monitor cage Question

zaccaryus Oct 17, 2006 11:00 AM

Hey, am an almost grad student (Need to finish 6 more undergrad credits)in the social sciences. I kept reptiles in High-school including a 3 foot water monitor that i raised from a baby- my all time favorite animal. I was very sad to learn in doing this current research that they were outlawed in Ny state. I could understand about the Niles but i found this to be a crime, a result of the backward ny state assembly no less. any ways, I know, regardless that i cant keep an animal of that size at this point in my life as I live in a small aprtment. My question is, I know I am willing to shellout 7 or eight hundred once my animal grows up for a cage, and I am kind of a technical retard. it seems to get a cage with these dimensions, which are as you al know rather unigue- Particularly the width and height i would need to customize(1700-2000)I have no probelm with the space but would I be assuming too much to count on a carpenter? are there any other directions I can go with this? if not I might have to reconsider and Obtain an ackie I fear. Thanks so much for your input,
Zachary

A carpenter may be a good option if you're not a "do-it-yourselfer". Problem is that it needs to be built on site (most doorways are 32" wide inside and home entrance doors are usually 36". I have double french doors to get my cages in to the reptile room. Plywood cages with 2"x4" frames are easy to build. Making them look nice takes some skill. Call a carpenter and inquire if it's do-able and for how much $$$.

hey-
I talked to a couple of breeders and I will be able to work something out within my price range in a few months- I might still try a carpenter though as well- for comparisons sake- I ordered my lizard- he is coming next week- I am very excited- looking forward to talking with everyone in the future-

i just finished building two argus monitor cages. just for a reference for you my cages cost me a little under $500 each for materials. sounds expensive but they were built to last. the cage is complete with 2 ft of dirt, drainable tub, and all walls lined with FRP. to have someone build a cage like this would be atleast 2 or 3 times the cost of materials.

good luck with your argus

cheers
