my new argus

zaccaryus Oct 25, 2006 09:53 PM

Hi- i got baby monitor from Reptile depot recently- very nerve racking as i stayed up all night waiting- i was very nervous- everything was fine- although i wish they would tell you how to unpack the little guy- lots of hissing but thats all- couple questions-
1. my guys biggest burrow is beneath his hot hiding box- do i need to read into this that perhaps the hot side of the tank is too hot?
2. my yellow bulb is weaker than my red- although the point of contact is higher than the red- I assume there is a physiological type benefit to having the basking spot be a yellow light? I usually use ceramic- this is the first time i have done this type of setup and the smallest tank i have used for a monitor- no problems with the gradient- just this issue- thanks-
Zachary

did you get your cage built already?

zaccaryus Oct 26, 2006 08:30 AM

Hi-
No he is in a 3 foot by 1 foot tank right niow- i was never planning to get a cage built right away- was just making sure it was possible- etc- he is ana bsoulute baby- seems like total overkill to put him in a cage that big already- would absolutely never see him- I have also decided to have a cage built for me in the upcoming months- i aplogize if I cant- give you the gallonage (not sure thats a word) of said tank- it was one of my last leftovers from the last time i kept herps- he is fine though- although he hasnt been fed yet- probably today- thankyou for your time,
Zachary

post a picture of your cage if you can. be sure to maintain humidity levels over 50% and so you know... baby Argus monitors need to eat everyday. feed them as much as they will eat. you'll be surprised how much this species eats compared to others.

cheers

Boy, can they eat... I've had my young argus since the end of August. He was a baby then when I got him, and has now almost tripled in size!!! He is easily over 2' long and quite heavy! You will be amazed just how fast they can digest huge meals if given the correct temps. I feed mine as many appropriately sized mice as he will eat, twice a day...which is about 10-12 hopper-sized mice a day. Great fun to watch him tripod and explore his cage! Good luck with yours!
