Find somebody with one or some (in the real world, not on the computer) and interact with it. You could go to a reptile expo, etc but they are usually insanely strung out from being jammed in little aquaria or even worse, deli cups. They do jump at you for food and you have to be quick. The fact that you're hesitant = don't rush out and buy one for novelty. People sell/give back their monitors to pet stores all the time because it "got too big to handle" etc. Don't be one of those people, PLEASE. I had a kid begging me to ship a hatchling/subadult to him last year. I avoided him b/c i had the feeling he would not be a long term keeper. Guess what,...he sold the one he bought(not mine) within a couple months b/c it was too expensive to feed and he lived in a rural area. Argus will still be around in 6 months. Take your time and choose your pet wisely.
i would expect a 4.5 foot monitor i would fed him every day on some sorts of goddies (rats, bids, etc) and i could store it in our frezer. i would give it a 9x6x5 cage.
