I've heard they exist yet I've never seen one over 5.5ft. At least I don't think I have.

My little girl..6ft 3.5 inches a while back...

She was 5.5ft at 1.5 years old, now shes 3.5 years old.

SHvar Jun 16, 2005 01:13 PM

If I could only rmember if I videotaped it, darn that was years ago.
The biggest Ive seen in person was a male BT that was 6ft 6 inches long, next is my female Sobek at over 6ft 3.5 inches, then a 6ft plus male by the same owner as the 6ft 6 incher. Ive heard of 6ft 2 in another female, and 2 cases of 7ft 3 males. Jody P has a male thats got to be 6ft 6inches to 6ft 8 inches (at least I hope he still has it).

Last year in decembre i bought 5 blackthroat hatchlings,of which i sold 2 of,and i am keeping the other three to make sure i have a pair. One of them, i believe a male, is now 70cm long. Am i on schedule? i mean, some people say my BT should have been at least 90cm by now. I feed them every day 2 small mice, instead of a big adult mouse every other day. I breed the mice myself on high quality mouse food. My BT,s look healty, rather big, most certainly not skinny. The cage is 350cm x 130cm x 130cm, i use plain dirt as substrate, the enclosure is indoor, fresh water is always available in a bowl easily big enough to soak 2 of my monitors at he same time, there are three different temperature area,s ; area one is 130 fahrenheit, area two is 90 fahrenheit, and area three has no heating and is 70 fahrenheit at the end. They always bask in area two,and as soon as i raise the temperature to 100fahrenheit they leave a bit more to area three. I also give em grasshoppers and crickets dusted with calcium and multivitamine twice a week as side-food. I want to have a 6.3 ft albig someday, but i do not think i am on schedule... Although, i have seen pictures of albigs people claiming it is just two months old at totall lenght of 70cm,but than i think, have these people ever seen a true hatchling? True hatchling are no bigger than a spoon and have very short tails, about egual size of SVL,and that changes rapidly within 3 months their tail is twice the size of the body. So,maybe a lot of people think they bought a 2month old albig at 70cm, but it is really already 5 or six months. Tell me... greetings barry ps: sorry for some bad english, i come from holland!

If it's that young and your only feeding it 2 mice a day, feed it more. Feed it as much as it will eat and it'll grow up healty as long as your temps and everything else is correct.

My female was 2 months old, shes not a BT shes a captive bred and born blackthroat/whitethroat/whitethroat cross from Robert Faust. She averaged 1 inch per week consistantly from 2 months old to 1 year in age, she was 2 months old when I got her. My male is a first generation BT/WT cross from him also, hes 1 year and 13 days older. At 1 year old she was 5ft long, at 2 years old she was 6ft long, now at 3.5 years old shes over 6ft 3.5 inches long.
There was a male BT from Europe that was CBB and grew to 6ft long at a year old according to Mark Bayless.
Growth is a direct result of food, and conditions that allow for such growth.
Ive receieved albigs that were a few years old that were small, and within a few months are alot larger, why better conditions that they live in. How about from 2 yrs old and 2 ft long to 4ft and 10lbs in 1 years time for a half cape banded WT cross? Or a cape banded that went from 3ft at 3 years old plus to almost 4ft in 2 months?
Many dont know how old their albigs are because they are WC, but I know how old mine are.
This is in my 5ft fiancees hands, Sobek at 2.5 months old and around 20 inches long already.

Well, is a spoon not about 9 inches? (22cm i believe) Ofcourse sobek was a bred in captivity/ farmbred, and those eggs get larger and produce bigger hatchlings because the eggs are produced in optimal condition,a constant perfectly high humidity and temp. My BT,s are WC. Anyway, what do you think of the conditions i provide for my BT,s? greetings, barry ps: very nice pictures!

SHvar Jun 26, 2005 01:00 PM

That hatched in the wild, they could be larger in captivity maybe. Depends what spoon your looking at, the one infront of me is 6 inches long.
The eggs from an albig are 2.25 inches long, not a small egg at all for an African monitor which are less developed at hatching compared to Asian, and especiallly Aussie monitors.
Oh by the way never believe the farm bred bullcrap, thats a big lie, farm bred is an other way to sell WC at higher prices.
She was captive bred and born in Spring TX, shes a hybrid albig, like my male directly from Faust also.
When I get a chance Ill see if I can notice anything that can help you out, Ive been very busy lately.

For a while now Ive set up and used basking spots that were just around a ceratin height or closer from bulbs to site, afterwards Ive measured temps to find some really high basking temps and varying effects to air temps.
At 3ft long Sobek was eating 6-9 adult mice a day, or the same amount of chicken peeps. Ive had others that ate 11-17 small adult mice every 3-5 days and grew almost a foot in 2 months (these were adults).
The basking temps, experiment with lowering the bulbs a bit, it will lower the air temp a bit nearby and raise the basking temps, see how that works, also with 2 in the same cage make sure theres lots of property (a few basking spots, water dishes, etc). Also experiment with raising them with higher wattage in a big enough cage to bring up air temps. It will take some time to see which works for those individual animals.
At around 8 months old Sobek was eating 10-12 ounce chicken peeps already if I remember right.

dutch Jun 27, 2005 03:45 PM

Thanks shvar, i am going to experiment and defenatly increase the number of mice i am feeding! greetings, barry
