white throat search

dfox Aug 20, 2005 05:29 AM

hey guys this is my first post i guess i'll tell the whole story i had recently lost my 7 ft lap water monitor that i had for around 8 years so needless to say ive been pretty upset well the whole time i had my water monitor i always had a fancy for the white throats so i finally found one on kingsnake it was perfect the guy said it was 2ft long and 8 months old which was great for me because then i could use all the mice and rats that i had left and the 6x4 cage that my water had grown out of so i bought it and within the hour it died well then i let one of my freinds talk me into a pair of blackthroats well i bought them but soon relized that blackthroats arent as pretty as whitethroats in my opinion and while i take care of these guys (so good they have grown 4-5" in a month) i still don't feel the bond with them i guess because they are something i really didn't want but i cant find any baby whitethroats or larger ones with the calm personality i have seen shvars lizards and am totally in aw from them i think her banded capes were even prettier than my water monitor so shvar hopefully you can hook me up with the person who sold you your whitethroat because all i am hitting is brick walls on the net and if anyone else has any info on good breeders let me know preferably cbb whitethroats
thanks guys
sorry it's so long

So he had some problems long before I got him.
He did originate from FR (Frank retes) of Goannaranch, probably the only consistant breeder of albigs left anymore.
Theres one with eggs right now (cape banded WTs), Im hoping he does get good hatching eggs, Scott Moser.
I hope Rob Faust gets back to producing albigs, he is responsible for some gorgeous creatures.

Unfortunatly, these animals are very rare in this country. I believe there are fewer than 50 living ones here in the U.S. I am referring of course to the true Whitethroats. The ones that Frank R., Pete Z., Me and now Scott M. have been lucky enough to produce. There are a couple others I'm sure, sorry if I left you out. Until someone proves me wrong, it's my firm belief that the true whites that come into this country get here quite by accident. Let me explain...the most beautiful ones are typically found in northeastern South Africa, so its not uncommon for those specimens to be captured just over the borders in Zimbabwe and Mozambique and then accidentally exported with a batch of Blackthroats.
So we are pretty lucky to have the ones we have now. The problem is that as a result of so few imports we have very oppurtunities to start good breeding programs. So its up to us to fix that and keep the captive breeding of this fantastic species going here in the U.S.

From what Ive found and have been looking around at. I guess even at the much higher prices they still suffer the same issues WC monitors commonly suffer in most keepers care, but a bit less due to initial cost to buy them.
Here are some pictures, I found I lost my 2 males recently from a combination of issues, a bit hard to explain, maybe later sometime.
This was one of Franks babies, his name was Zeus.

This is Zeus with one that Rob would recognize, Shadow, these 2 were great captives, they are both greatly missed.

This another of Robs beautiful babies, shes a real sweetheart and is doing great.

very pretty monitors sorry for your loss
what is the differance between the pic on top and the one on the bottom the one on top has so much more pattern is it a different species? or do they vary that much
thanks
donnie

A male cape banded WT top, Zeus, from Frank Retes.
The second picture is Zeus with a first generation blackthroat/cape banded whitethroat cross, Shadow.
The very bottom is a second generation BT/WT/WT cross, Sobek. She has gone through some amazing color changes as she grew up, here she is at around 5-6 months old. She has color and pattern from both animals.

Looks like Sobeks BT coloration is most dominate now.

When she is mostly done shedding the banded WT shows for a while when she is warmed up and clean (not often). Shes constantly in shed, from one to the next.
Its hard to explain withouty seeing her in person and seeing the colors and patterns when warm. Pictures dont do her alot of justice but shes dulling as she gets bigger and older, this happens.

Tann Aug 24, 2005 01:33 PM

Yeah, I've noticed the dulling in color in Apollo. He stays in a constant shed to he's 99.9% always covered in either mud or dirt so I hardly ever see him clean and purty.
