Ditch the sand or even use it mixed with a few feet of field dirt then fill that cage up so he can dig, and conserve moisture, and be a monitor, after all they spend half their life underground.
I hope your feeding a diet that contains alot of whole animals as the basis, mice, peeps, etc, this covers all of the bases on needed nutrients.
