BT,Swollen jaw/lost tooth

snakeball Sep 29, 2005 09:42 AM

I was feeding my BT named Black T-rex today. He is 2 years old 5 1/2 feet long and weighs 25 lbs. I noticed the back part of his bottom jaw on the left side was a little swollen (around the molar area) and when I gave him a large rat a tooth fell out of his mouth while he was swallowing. I have never seen a monitor tooth outside of a monitors mouth. The tooth looked like a healthy tooth. He ate no problem and does not seem to be in any pain when I touched the swollen jaw. I am going to bring him to the vet to check it out but I wanted to see if anyone here has ever seen or heard of something like this happening with their BT or other monitors. Also do monitor teeth grow back.

Thanks, Sean

Out.
Its so common for them to shed worn or broken teeth that you could easily fill the bottom half of a shot glass in 2 years, not including most of them which they swallow or just loose). When a monitor wears a tooth out or bites something hard sometimes a tooth breaks loose from the jawbone, like a shark a new one is already on its way up to take its place.
As for a swollen jaw, Ive never seen that on any albig, let alone where a tooth fell out, their teeth do not root into the flesh like ours, they attach to the jawbone.

While the teeth may not root like human teeth, the swelling could be indicative of an abcess in the jaw or below it, etc. I'd say it would be a safe bet to take the animal to the vet anyway.
