white throats

nogard Oct 16, 2005 08:29 PM

So they are basically the same as blackthroats, but are a little smallers, in the post below I asked where to find a true captive bred blackthroat, so if I can not find one should I go with a true captive bred white throat? Is it true that they are the same as a blackthroat just smaller? When will someone have them available? I bet there is a long waiting list
thanks

BTs are large subspecies of the WTs, different colors, patterns.
WTs in general (many local versions range from 4-7ft plus).

So a normal Whitethroat can get just as large as a Blackthroat, right? I'm just curious, it's something I've been meaning to figure out.

Namibian WTs can get big, and Tanzanian, it depends, on average BTs (the darker subspecies) are bigger.

Whats the average for the Tanz. ones? 4-5ft?

Well, the Tanzanian WT a friend has is over 5ft, with a chunk of tail missing on the tip, probably 5-6ft plus. If you refer to BTs (being WTs from Tanzania) they can grow from 5-7ft plus.
Namibian WTs such as those San Diego zoo has (example Titan, may he rest in peace) they can get long also, in fact Titan was 6ft 10 inches years ago.
Cape bandeds are the only real small WTs (4-5ft).

Hi,
I would even up the average size for an equatorial Varanus albigularis to 6-7 feet average, if they were not used so much for bushmeat and pet trade markets.... I have had several male and female V. albigularis, and know others who had them too averaging 6 feet total length; the largest known V. albigularis reported came from Tanzania ~1936 and measure at 7'3" total length.

The majority of V. albigularis from this region are darker, with coastal forms having reds and even blue hues to them - the more inland you go, they become browns...darker onthe coast, reds/browns inland as a rule...and more yellow on the nares, markings, tail as you go either north or browns as you go south.

Cheers,
markb
