blackthroat captive breedings

nogard Oct 18, 2005 05:35 PM

I know that captive bred blackthroats are very rare, so is it worth the time to attempt to breed them myself, I am not tryng to make a ton of money, the imports already do that, but it just makes sense to me that there wouldnt be anything wrong with trying it out right? I am not trying to make a name for myself or look for bragging rights, I just want a true captive bred baby blackthroat, and see if there is any differences between imports and CB, anyone think that it is a bad idea?
thanks

breeding ANY monitor in captivity is never a bad idea, more captive production the better. The question is, is it worth it to you to try to reproduce them in captivity, its alot of dedication, space and money, not to mention all of the trial and error of the whole breeding experience. Its usually not A B=success there are alot of more variables involved.
But all in all cbb blackthroats are great, any captive monitor is great and usually preferred over imported specimens.
If i had more room, id be doing them as well, but until i make it rich breeding capes, im limited in space...........ha ha ha ha ha ha...lol

I have the space and the money is not an issue, I put in tons of effort into all of my animals, and figured that I am going to give it a shot, I agree that captive breeding is not a bad idea at all, and it never will be,

I'd love it if breeding caught on and put importing out of business. Once I get alittle better off in the income pool, I plan on giving breeding black/white throats a go myself. Plus, if anything, it's an awesome experiance learning more about the monitors themselves and how they interact with each other.

Well, Im in the process of producitivy of CBB blackthroats. I have 5 blackthroats right now. There in a large 14ft long X 8ft wide X 6ft tall enclosure thats split into two. My bigger male has the 8x8 part of the cage, and the 3 new juvies have 6x8 of the cage. But I just found a blackthroat that I had bought and lost a couple months ago and It was a female so she will be going back in with my bigger male in the 8x8 part of the cage so that makes 5 blackthroats. Im so happy. I hope to have some CBB blackthroats within the next year or so. Wish me luck!

p.s. Food is VERY expensive for blackthroats. They eat an incredible amount of food and Im learning VERY fast thats Its getting a bit pricy. I just bought 400 large adult mice last tuesday and Im already down to 300-310. So its no cheap business but worth the money In my opinion. LOTS of fun. So I encourage you to get into them. Not enough people breed blackthroats. Good luck!
