Cage Plans?

modifiedloser Mar 29, 2006 02:53 PM

I just recieved a free Black Throat Monitor from a friend of mine, who recieved it as a rescue, but didn't have the room. I actually ended up liking the little guy (12" snout to tail tip) so I'm planning on keeping him for life.

Now my question is, does anyone have any good cage plans? I need something nice, no water troughs or anything, it's going to be in my living room. Or does anyone know of an easy to obtain piece of furniture that can be turned into a nice cage for an ADULT BT.

Any response is apreciated, thank you.

Hmmm in the livingroom huh? As the lil guy will make it to 4 ft when he is grown, I'd say you'd be best off to just convert the room! Honestly I cannot think of a piece of furniture that would be large enough for a full grown BT. Custom is the only way to go. You could use a water trough for the inside base but then frame it in with nice wood, put FRP on the inside walls, and secure it well. There is another pic in the monitors gallery that shows a smaller trough that had that done but only with rough 2x4s. I'm figuring I'll have to buy a small shed and convert that when my guy gets bigger. . . Let me know if you find anything else good, I'm already looking for mine.

BTs average 5-7ft if kept something close to correctly.
As far as cage plans, one cage is not a good idea for a small growing monitor, you should use multiple cages suitable for the animals size as it grows. With an albig you should need 4x2x2 for a few months, 3x3x6ft for a while, then 4x4x8ft or much larger in not time at all.
The best monitor cages are homemade plywood, with FRP lining, they can be made to whatever size needed, they are not too heavy or bulky, but durable, very much so.
Heres a 10x5x4ft plywood/FRP cage, this was part way into construction, this is for ONE adult albig..

As far as 4ft long goes, this one is a female, the smaller sex, also she passed 4ft when she was 8 months old.

I'm thinking of using a horse trough like proexotics does, but building a nice piece of furniture around it. Basically put a door on the side of the "furniture" part, that way I can slide that part away from the trough. I'll build it high as well, but then he'll have dirt to borrow in. How does that sound?

The weight on the floor also. I have mine in the basement, a large monitor cage is very heavy with thousands of pounds of dirt alone.
