BT feeding doubt

l_l3lackwolf_l Jun 03, 2006 10:08 AM

Long time no see all! Just wondering one thing: my blackthroat is around 40 inches and i was told before that by pet shop owners, and my friends at the zoo that i should feed my monitor more insects than meat, or he will get excessive protein. Ive been doing that since he was a newborn (a mouse/rat/baby bunny/chick/eggs once a week and the rest locusts). But at what size basically will they start getting tired of locusts like mine got of crickets eventually?(funny how he would actually squish it rather than eat a cric) Dont think you can have an adult BT eating locusts with lots of interests... Also wondering because id rather use more of my stock of chicks, bunnies and mice rather than spending quite a load on locusts.
In other words, how long would it be necessary to feed my 40 inches BT locusts as a basic?
Cheers.

Feed them as an interest item, you know if they still want some let them eat them, if not stop using them.
Mine always lose interest before or around 3ft.
After a certain size albigs do what you saw with crickets with all insects, step on them, smash them with their noses, and ignore them. Some will continue to show some interest later on but most prefer more substantial prey items by far.
Sobek wont even look at any insect any more, hasnt shown interest in around 2 years in any, no matter how big they are. all of my hissers were fed off to others after that, or given away mostly.
