Getting a new baby...

Malestryx May 23, 2007 10:56 PM

Hello! Good to find such a wonderful forum *before* I make the big decision. I have done endless research, and have opted to purchase a black-throat monitor. Why? Because of my love for reptiles, their wonderful reputation, my ability to house one appropriately, and my photographic memory for all things animal. I have had reptiles in the past, but nothing quite so large. I have total confidence, and a husband who is more than willing to help me built an appropriate enclosure.

What I need to know, is where the heck to start? I've been to ProExotics and LLL Reptiles (and a hundred others). I am nervous about LLL, because of their wild-caught sales, yet Pro probably won't have babies until October or November and have a waiting list. What are your suggestions, and does anyone know of anyone else reliable and respectable I could check out? (Been all over the internet, and frankly, I'm exasperated.)

I want a captive bred, captive born, baby or very young juvenile. Am I crazy? Is it even possible to get one except between December and March? Thank you all for your input, and please have a wonderful day! Can't wait to join you as proud BT Monitor owners!

Heres the thing. They tend to be born in the fall and available shortly afterward. Good ones sell fast. This makes you wonder about why someone still has one now. I have seen the same ads on kingsnake over and over so I know that the pictures are not accurate. I bought mine from an ad on kingsnake. It was from Rainforest reptiles. It said a 7 " Blackthroat and when I got it it was 17 ". I'm guessing the ad was old. He's doing well and I'm happy but it shows you.

Pro exotics has nice ones and I wish I had been in the market earlier when they had them in stock. They have a great rep with monitors and I would be very confortable purchasing from them. If you can't wait I would just make sure the sellor is someone who is established and appreciates their reputation so they probably won't sell you a poor quality animal.

Good luck finding one.

If your thinking about getting a BT, i'd recommend Pro Exotics. I purchased a baby BT from Robin and it came very well protected and in great shape. Ate crickets same day it came and so forth. The wait is worth it, trust me =)
