my fisrt one is, is do they grow fast??? i know they get big i was just wondering how fast. also are there any helpful tips for a first time owner for raising one??

This is a hard question to answer because there are so many different species and care tips. What specifically are you looking at.

i was going to get a black throat monitor.

They grow fast, they grow big (5-6 ft), be prepared to spend a lot of money for feeding them (rats, chickens, etc...) be prepared to have an enclosure where the monitor can comfortably grow/thrive. They need dirt, so be prepared for dirt and they need heat, so be prepared for heat. Also, be prepared for possibly having your nads bitten off.

I am not speaking from experience because I do not own a black throat, but I know because I have thoroughly researched them and read every possible post in this forum and others about them because I want one, but i can not provide the proper accommodations as of now. But soon I will!

LoL- something I don't have to worry about thankfully

Seriously though, think long and hard before getting a Blackthroat. They get massive and are very expensive to house and feed. There are more realistic 'household' sized monitors available, so look around and research like crazy!
