Opinions Appreciated : Male or Female?

SentinelSerpents Sep 23, 2005 07:46 PM

Hi all,

I have lurked on this forum for years and finally have two new Salvator family members, a four year old and a yearling. Before I left them to settle into their own enclosures after a flight from Colorado, I snapped a few pictures of the smaller animal while he or she was having a post-travel soak. I would greatly appreciate if anyone could fathom an educated guess on gender- I vote male, but before I start calling him or her a he, I would value some more experienced imput.

Thanks!

Lauren

As for sexing try coming back in a month or so. As of right now it really isn't showing any signs of anything clear. Once they hit maturity it is much easier and accurate to take a crack at.

At that age/size tail base will not do you much good. Bulging of hemipenes comes with maturity.

You'd be better off posting pictures of the head/face from the side.

I would say "she." However, it is a bit small to be making definite decisions. Give it an androgynous name and then it does not matter.

Thank you for your thoughtful replies. I will post new pictures in the near future once he or she has put on some additional size and continues to attain a more mature look. I am really enjoying them so far like I knew I would- the four year old was tripoding yesterday and both are becoming more inquisitive. They both slept for quite some time after their trip- I even enjoyed watching them doze, though I tried not to be intrusive about it and would only poke my head in now and then to check on them.

This little guy or gal was already named by the previous owner "Rapture." The four year old was also dubbed "Velocity." The names seem to fit them well from what I have seen so far. I will try to post some pictures of the larger animal in the near future- Velocity is a bit more nervous/defensive and has a nose rub that he or she arrived with, but otherwise seems to be settling in well so far.

Thank you again for your replies!

I'd say there's no doubt in my mind that it's a female. Your head shots are just right to be able to get a good idea of the size and shape. Good luck with both.
