Hi, JP et al.:
The monitor is now about 3 feet. I would like to get her in a cage that will hold her until she is 5 feet. She is a Sumatran.
I spent a lot of time on cage web sites, pricing and so on. Then I went to the local hardware store. I ended up buying a free-standing shower stall and special ordering a storm window that will fit on the front. This all is less than a quarter the price of the next best manufactured reptile cage. So, the lizard will live in a phone booth for a while. The advantage is that this cage will be constructed entirely of plastic , metal, and glass. It will also be light enough that I can pick it up. The down side? Not much floor space. But, I will put in a shelf and so on. I am going to get her a metal halide light for her basking pleasure.
The boa people got us beat hands-down on caging. Lots of people manufacture cages that lack ventilation or have a place to put in a high-wattage basking light you would want for a monitor. But, they are designed for boas.
Do any of you monitor heads work with the sheet PVC and so on, constructing cages that can be moved and cleaned? They could be built in sections as well. There is a market there.
Me and my scaly friends thank you in advance for any input....
Sam
