leaves in my waters cage

hi i want to put leaves on the bottom of my water monitors cage..i have 1.5-2' of dirt already. i washed them out in a water bleach mixture. i was wondering if there is anything else i have to or can do as i dont want to hurt my monitor...thanks Gerald
