Broken claw.

rivethead Jan 19, 2006 08:34 PM

I just noticed that my water monitors claw is nearly broken off her largest toe on her back left leg, it looks like there is either bone or the inside of the claw still attatched. Is this somthing i can care for or is this somthing that will have to heal itself ? If so how should i go about care?
Thanks in advance.
-Ben

hello,

left alone, and without any medicine, these lost claws will heal quickly. mine salvators have lost nails many times. do not bandage, or clean it, the lizards immune system will take care of it. if the animal is well adjusted and cared for with high basking temps, high food intake and low stress levels, it will be fine. stressed or sick animals will heal slower. cheers, -john

If the claw is just broken in half or avulsed (whole claw came out from root) and it just happened in last few days...wipe it down with Betadyne or povidone iodine antiseptic. If it's been that way awhile, leave it alone. It would already be granulating and may or may not grow back-the avulsed ones dont grow back. If the toe is swollen or any drainage/pus, you should take it to the vet. good luck.
