New Water

holygouda Feb 28, 2006 09:06 PM

I just got a new water baby from Switzer Reptiles(Kevin was a pleasure to work with!) He ate right out of the box and seems to be very friendly and curious. He will even walk out onto my hand when I open the cage and Ive only had him a couple weeks(I try to handle him about 30 minutes everyday).
Based on his pattern, I am assuming it is the "typical" javan water type.
I've been feeding him dusted crickets everyday and giving him a fuzzy twice a week(instead of crickets). He doesnt seem to care for meal worms too much, but how long should I stick with this diet before he needs more rodents? I will hopefully become more active with this community now that I have a little one to share with everybody!

Your water would do fine on crickets alone for a lot longer than you'd want to pay for the huge number of crickets. The move to larger food items is largely financial--->> much cheaper per gram, to feed rodents than crickets. Also, a rat, weighing twenty times as much as a mouse, costs only three times as much. It's about "bang for the buck". Feed hoppers, mice, etc. when he is comfortably able.
