help with 6wk old nile

yenko Jun 22, 2006 04:21 PM

I just bought a nile from a reptile show, and he hasnt been very active. He crawls around like his legs wont support him, seems lazy. I had one before and it was always very active. Can anyone give me a little insight. Oh his temps and humidity are fine.

How long have you had this animal? I wouldn't be so certain
about it being 6 weeks old either, especially if you got it from a reptile show. I think your best bet would be to take the animal to a vet and have it checked for parasites and diseases, since the animal was probably caught and imported its probably sick if you're seeing an unusual pattern in its behavior. Good Luck though! Would love to hear an update on the little guy!--Marie

Your probably right, I'm sure he was imported. I took him to a local herp today and he said it looks like something of a calcium deficiancy but he is very young so maybe he was crushed in transport or by the mother. The guy told me that maybe he would come out of it if I get him to eat and soak him everyday since he cant really walk well enough to get in his water bowl. When he's in the water he looks like a perfectly healthy young nile but when in his cage, he just seems lazy. maybe someone has an idea of what he will eat. I tried mealworms, pinkies, and a quail egg. He only showed interest in the egg.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT.

No crickets?

he doesnt seem to like them however i have some dusted with calcium and some that arent in his cage but I dont think hes ate any of them.

That's definitely not the norm. He's just be chasing after and downing crickets like a bottomless pit. The best thing to do would be to administer calcium to him orally and make sure all of his food is vitamin/mineral dusted.

thanks, I'll do that.

How's your nile doing?

My NILE is 30 inches long. No idea of age, it's a rescue. He WONT eat live food. NO interest. The guy who had him before me (the mailman who found him basking in the street while delivering mail) said he got it to eat a baby rat, but I dont know if it was live or dead. He would only eat canned dog food (I thought that was a terrible idea but read it on the net in several places) Raw chicken drives him crazy though...
