What do people reccomend as a substrate for nile monitors? A monitor I know was on walnut shells, but it seemed to get too dusty for her and caused sneezing.

the best substrate is what nature would have provided....dirt. If you are housing them indoors, then making the substrate a little on the sandy side will help prevent the cage from gettng "muddy" from travel to and from the water pan. If you are in a climate that allows for it, try to house your monitor lizard outdoors. Look around on the net for outdoor caging ideas. I have sucessfully housed mine outside for years. Frank Retes has really good outdoor cages. Kathy (nessie's mom) has good outdoor cages. All of which employ plain old "earth" as a substrate.

I'll second that. Try to get a good mix that'll hold it's form for burrows. If for some reason good clean dirt isn't readily available, try to provide logs over the top of your substrate to give it something over its head when it does dig.
Can we post some links to pictures or instructions for outdoor enclosures? I have ideas, but would like to hear other people's ingenuity and failures.
