water monitor or blackthroat

sonny12 Aug 02, 2006 02:11 AM

honestly people what is a better choice of monitor blackthroat or water. whats the size comparison, i read that waters get huge but i see way more pics of giant blackthroats and ive heard from many that the average size of a water is 5 to 6 feet not 7 to 8 feet with i think is over exaggerated believe they have the potential. anyway the size doesnt matter but which one tames down better i personally like waters more but rather have something i can work with. hoping for a honest answer from peoples experience and not just cause this is a water mon forum.i really want something that i can tame a little a big lizard doesnt bother me

Either animal would be a fine choice. Both species can have great potential for tolerating humans. With good hasbandry, both are virtually bullet-proof. The only down-side for most people is the size factor. You are correct about "average" sizes. Both species average around five or six feet, but can get to seven. Records however show V.salvator getting longer than V.albigularis (ionides). The only negative for most folks would be the size of these animals. They get big and require big enclosures. They also eat lots of food. My big Orante Niles can eat as much or more than my black lab!
Gather as much info as you can before you make your choice, and make sure you have everything ready for it before you bring one home.
