KYW/CBS3 (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) 19 September 06 Four-Foot Lizard Captured In South Jersey (Calvin Hughes)
Vineland, N.J. Some South Jersey residents are asking; why did the giant lizard cross the road?
A few quick-thinking people had to jump into action to catch the four-foot reptile on South Delsea Road in Vineland.
The Nile Monitor, a type of African Lizard, amazingly made it across the busy highway without any major incident on Monday afternoon.
The animal bolted across Delsea Drive and sought refuge under a row of cars at the Bidic Autolines Car Dealership.
Jennifer Burgess, an employee at the dealership, used a broom to flush the animal out from underneath the cars.
A customer, Robert Ingram, waited on the other side with a fishing net and was able to capture the lizard.
With the assistance of Burgess, they were able to get the animal into the net safely.
Burgess suffered cuts and scratches from the lizard but said it was worth it because the animal is safe.
A local zoo is caring for the lizard and officials believe the owner may have left the animal on the side of the road because they could not take care of it anymore.
