Nile Monitor Races?

sidbarvin Jan 04, 2007 06:57 PM

I was reading about Nile monitors on another site and they described nominates and ornates as different races. I think what I was reading was outdated because as far as I know, please correct me if I'm wrong, Niloticus and Ornatus have since been reclassified into separate species. Anyhow, on different occasions, I,ve heard others refer to their monitors as "Tanzanian Niles". Obviously this would refer to the country from which the lizard came but what I was wondering is, does anybody know if Niles from different areas have any distinguishing markings or other physical characteristics. I've seen alot of pictures of Niles on-line with many color variations and physical characteristics. Also, I was at a reptile dealer in my area and they had something they called a Brundi Nile they were asking $50.00 more for this one than a common Nile. (next page)

Is this just a merchandising tatic? I have two common Niles and both look very different in color, color pattern, and head shape. Could these be different races, different sexes, or are individuals monitors simply just different.

Justin, all I have are some really krappy pics right now. I doubt anyone could tell anything from them. I neen to mess around with the new camera a bit, practice you know. Also I,ve been putting together an enclosure together in the room the larger one occupies and moving his stuff around so he,s been pretty pissed. He and the smaller one are'nt compatible and the smaller one is ready for a big cage. In a day or so I'll try getting one of the big guy. What sucks is the fact that I have to put the cage for the other one together a little at a time so I dont freak him out too bad because he lives in the whole room. I,ve gotten the sides top and bottom together so far. Ive been building it in sections at work and putting it together in the room in stages. The big fella's already climbed up and taken a krap in the bottom a couple times. I had him somewhat manageable untill I started messing around in there. Now he fights like hell and bites me when I handle him, so I wont bother for a couple days.
